Founded in 1796, Cleveland, the second most populous city in the state, sits right on beautiful Lake Eerie and the Cuyahoga River. It is a very urban environment which relies heavily on industrial businesses and large company headquarters, and its geographic location has been key to its growth. It is home to corporate headquarters of several large companies such as Sherwin-Williams Company, Cliffs Natural Resources, KeyCorp, and others. It is a vast city with many tall buildings, such as the Terminal Tower and Key Tower, and has an extensive cultured community.
Many of the attractions for visitors to this city are based on refined culture. There are many museums and even some excellent children’s museums and science centers which attract many local families as well as visitors from around the country. For instance, the Great Lakes Science Center and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame draw in many tourists each year. Cleveland is also home to the Playhouse Square Center, the second largest performing arts center in America.
During the warmer summer months the Cleveland Lakefront State Park is one of the biggest tourist destinations in the city. It runs along the Lake Eerie shore and offers everything from beaches with swimming access to a marina for boating. There is a nice boardwalk for shopping and sightseeing and a variety of biking and fitness trails. Fishing is also allowed in certain sections of the water and there are playgrounds for younger children to enjoy.
Pictures of the Cleveland shoreline in this area look as if they could have been taken in California or Florida where the larger national beaches are located. Yet, since the climate is much colder during the winter, the beach fun is shorter lived in Cleveland.
