One of the diseases highlighted in the report was Pertussis which has steadily been on the rise in Columbus since the spring of 2010. The city diagnosed more than 960 cases which was a 25-year high.
Other health initiatives the city established include a 2007 ban on smoking in public places and restaurants, a joint effort to work with the local restaurant industry to combat obesity and educate citizens on eating healthy, and the department of health regularly runs emergency preparedness exercises (15 exercises in 2010). The department also provides flu immunization shots to anyone who walked through their office doors and at local schools. In total the city gives over 26,000 immunizations yearly.
