Critical Care Providers Should Know

Miami has a significantly high count of residents who speak Spanish. Medical providers, especially emergency responders and trauma professionals, are encouraged to be fluent or at the very least familiar with basic Spanish. Communication done well can make a life saving difference in emergency situations.

18% of adults in Miami reported being in poor to fair health last year. Only 15% of adults smoke regularly and 22% were obese. Low birth weight babies occurred 8.5% of the time. Unfortunately, an alarmingly high 34% of Miami-Dade residents went without health insurance last year.

The Miami-Dade County Health Department received a federal grant of $14.7 million in 2010. The grant will help the MDCHD stay atop chronic disease prevention and create healthy communities. Prevention is a key strategy of the MDCHD. The Communities Putting Prevention to Work program is a good example of the department’s process. The CPPW attempts to improve positive health indicators like nutrition and physical activity while decreasing negative health risks like smoking and obesity in an effort to prevent and reduce chronic diseases.

With a yearly threat of hurricanes, refugees and natural disasters the MDCHD is also very active in planning and preparing for large scale public emergencies. Medical providers should visit the Emergency Preparedness section on the MDCHD website.

About Miami

Miami originally became a part of the state of Florida in 1896. Located on the southern tip of the state, it is one of the most popular tourist attractions within the United States. Popular with older people looking for a warm place to retire and college aged kids on spring break alike, the atmosphere in the city can be serene and peaceful as well as lively and rowdy.

Besides Miami Beach which attract horde of visitors every year, this city has major importance to the television and movie industry. It is a common location for some of the most famous celebrities to be seen and it has its fair share of luxurious hotels, upscale restaurants, and fine shopping boutiques. Much of this is located in the South Beach area of the city.

There are also some smaller enclaves of residents who have created small cities within the larger city, each with their unique atmosphere reflective of their native culture. For instance, visitors can go to Little Havana for a very latino feel and a variety of small shops with unique goods, or they could visit Little Haiti to experience the Creole side of town.

Downtown Miami is more reflective of a typical American urban environment. It is home to many large businesses and is thriving to this day.
