Critical Care Providers Should Know
Phoenix typically registers 3-4 consecutive months where the temperature is above 100 degrees. In the summer months critical care providers should be prepared to recognize and treat heat exhaustion and dehydration. In 2009 there were a total of 40 heat induced deaths. Heat related deaths predominately occurred to white men 45 years of age or older.
Mortality rates in Phoenix have steadily declined since 1999. Heart disease, cancer and accidental deaths remain leading causes of death in Phoenix.
Although Phoenix is renowned for a dry climate, the air quality and high heats inside the city can cause respiratory problems. The Phoenix valley is a large and sprawling metropolis and transit times to the nearest hospital can be lengthy. The population of Phoenix and the surrounding cities is older than the national average because of the warm weather and seasonal attributes. Medical care providers should expect to treat more elderly patients in Phoenix.

Officially established as a city in 1881, Phoenix is currently the capital of Arizona. Though it does have a couple months per year where the temperatures can drop below the freezing point, most of the time this is a very dry, extremely hot city that receives very little rainfall. This climate is what makes it a popular travel destination for Americans who want to escape the snowy weather that covers many other states in winter.
Due to its location in the southwestern region of the U.S, many travelers think of deserts and cactus when they imagine visiting this city. While there definitely are cactus and tons of sun, this city is also home to one of the most extravagant luxury resorts in the country, the Biltmore Resort and Spa. Every luxury you could imagine is right here on the grounds of this resort, which is why it is frequented by the stars and even the U.S. presidents.
Yet, there are some benefits to the hot, dry climate in this city. For instance, it has one of the country’s few theme parks in operation year round. Castles N’ Coasters draws in vacationing families and tourists from afar twelve months a year with all of the typical amusement park rides, including a roller coaster.
Hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts are also drawn in by the city’s mountain ranges. Camelback Mountain is the most visited area, especially for more experienced hikers who want to climb to the highest point in the city. There also some trails and amusements for less experienced hikers.
Other amusements that travelers enjoy include botanical gardens, art centers, and a variety of interesting museums.
