Critical Care Providers Should Know

San Francisco is working to improve the health of their community. They are leading a new “environmental” approach to change the societal context in which disease and injury occur. The health department is actively trying to involve communities and neighborhoods and to change the local environments making them more aware of healthy choices, how to avoid injury, accidents and unhealthy behavior.

The program is operated by a branch of the San Francisco Department of Health. They provide consultation, mentoring, organizational development, professional development and program planning services.

Much of the data and reporting on the department of health’s website pertains to San Franciscans living with HIV/AIDS because the city’s population living with the disease higher than the national average. San Francisco committees are cautiously optimistic that ongoing efforts to educate and prevent the spread of the disease are reflected in the population data trends.

About San Francisco

San Francisco was founded in 1776 and is located in the northern region of the state of California. Since it is almost entirely surrounded by water, the climate tends to be cooler than other areas of California. It is consistently mild throughout the year, with the summers not being too hot and the winter months rarely getting very cold. Unlike some other major cities, it gets its fair share of rain during the cooler seasons.

While California as a whole is known for its wonderful beaches and surfing culture, the Pacific Ocean shoreline in San Francisco is not one of the premier destinations for travelers. This is because of the milder climate in this city, which creates waters much cooler than most people care to swim in. Yet, this beach remains an attraction for daring surfers who enjoy the more dangerous and challenging waves.

The Golden Gate Bridge remains the most popular attraction in this city, both for local residents and visitors. This is a very large suspension bridge that leads into Marin County, California. While it is most known for the high number of suicides from people who go there just to jump off into the ocean, it has actually been built into a recreational area along the ground below.

Part of the adventure of the bridge is driving or walking across it and looking out at the amazing landscape below. The other part of the adventure is enjoying the parks and beaches that have been designed along the water below for more leisurely enjoyment.

The San Francisco cable car system is the world’s last manually operated cable car system. An icon of San Francisco, the cable car system forms part of the intermodal urban transport network operated by the San Francisco Municipal Railway.

Popular San Francisco attractions off the beach include touring the famous Alcatraz prison, cruises on the San Francisco Bay, having some family fun at Fisherman’s Wharf, and enjoying the vineyards in Wine Country.
